Did you know that we have two brains in our body? One is located in our head and the other in our gut! A network of neurons that line our gut creates the Enteric Nervous System (ENS). This nervous system is so sensitive that scientists named it the “second brain”. Our two brains are like best buddies, they are constantly communicating and have a direct influence on each other. Cool, right? But what does this have to do with how we feel? Let me explain.
Our brain uses neurotransmitters, which are a type of chemical, to communicate with the cells in our body. There are many types of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. Recent research shows that our gut produces a lot of neurotransmitters, including more than 80% of our body’s serotonin and around 50% of our body’s dopamine. These two chemicals are key factors in our mental well-being. If our gut is unwell, our body won’t be able to produce the necessary neurotransmitters to keep us mentally at peace. This could lead to an increase in anxiety and depression levels.
Here are 5 ways to improve your gut health:
- Eat a wide variety of food. This could include different fruits, veggies, beans, etc. Consuming different types of food will give your gut the minerals, vitamins, and fibers it needs to work efficiently.
- Have a lot of probiotics. Probiotics are food that is filled with good bacteria. Some of the most common probiotic foods are yogurt, kombucha, and kimchi.
- Make water your best friend. You’ve probably heard your parents telling you to keep drinking water. Well, they’re right! Water gets your digestive system flowing smoothly, reducing the strain on your gut.
- Get enough sleep. Teens need an average of 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Sleep is fundamental for our growth and body efficiency.
- Exercise regularly. It doesn’t have to be something big. Just go for a walk or bike ride, as long as you are moving your body!
Keep your gut happy by doing the above and your brain will thank you in a good mood. Maybe the next time you are told to think happy thoughts, it may start with “feeding” the brain with happy thoughts.
