We have been running the Shanti Club in Scullen Middle School since the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year and it has been a hit among our peers! To kick off 2024, we introduced students to the Myers-Briggs personality test to help them identify their personalities and find themselves.
Four dichotomies comprise the Myers-Briggs personality test, introversion-extroversion, sensing-intuition, thinking-feeling, and judging-perceiving. After taking the test, the result is a four-letter representation of your personality. Each letter stands for a different aspect of a person’s personality. The test identifies sixteen different personality types, and each one is unique. For example, one could have an INTJ personality type. The ‘I’ stands for Introverted, the ‘N’ stands for iNtuition, the ‘T’ stands for Thinking, and the ‘J’ stands for Judging.
We shared the MBTI test with students and had them take the test. Then, we separated them into groups based on their personality type. We had one group of P (perceiving), one group of J (judging), and one group with both P and J. Then, we gave each group some M&Ms and told them to create a house out of the candies. Afterward, we had students spot differences in each house built. They noticed that the color-coordinated house was the J group, which is common in Judging personality types. We also had them vote on which houses they felt were the most creative, and which house they considered the best. The P group was determined to have the most creative house, and the Mixed group had the best, according to the students.
We have had so much fun in the Shanti Club and we look forward to sharing more knowledge to help and educate our peers. We plan on having a nearby mental health club come and give a presentation to our club this March and look forward to meeting new groups similar to ours! We are also so excited to start expanding to more middle and high schools in our district in the next few years!
